Tractor Operator Examination - Effective from August 4, 2026
The examination is 3 hours long. It has 60 questions, and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials you need for the exam are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a blank sheet of paper, a calculator, and an eraser. No other materials or reference documents are allowed during the exam.
Elements of skills that may be the subject of questions
Operating a tractor includes the operation of a loader, a backhoe, and a bulldozer.
Section 1 - Prepare the equipment and perform pre-start checks (35%)
- Perform pre-start checks:
- Check basic mechanical components before start-up
- Clean and greas machine components
- Interpret dashboard symbols
- Install the GPS system when required (especially Dozer)
- Assess and secure the work environment:
- Inspect the work environment and assess potential hazards
- Plan the work area
- Plan safety measures
- Follow surveying specifications:
- Interpret surveying data and identify types of markers (stakes, string lines, paint)
- Read surveying plans and survey measurements
- Interpret surveyor data (Total station, GPS, Laser)
Section 2 -Operate a loader and a backhoe (45%)
- Apply loading techniques:
- Prepare the loading area with the loader and the backhoe
- Load materials into trucks (soil, sand, aggregates) or stockpile them
- Load materials with accessories
- Apply excavation techniques with the backhoe:
- Use the right accessories for the type of work to be done
- Dig trenches, ditches, and foundations
- Backfill and dig an excavation
- Apply surface-preparation techniques with the backhoe:
- Apply procedures according to the type of site
- Perform handling tasks:
- Retrieve and transport materials (wood, iron, concrete, pipes)
Section 3 -Operate a bulldozer (20%)
- Perform terrain-preparation work with a bulldozer:
- Clear stumps, rip, and loosen hard surfaces with a bulldozer
- Perform stripping and drainage work
- Perform infrastructure construction work with a bulldozer:
- Build the foundation of a road or parking lot
- Backfill pipelines and utility lines
- Perform levelling and finishing work with a bulldozer:
- Spread materials (sand, stone, earth)
- Grad terrain with proper drainage, a road structure, or a parking lot
