Roofer Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 60 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Skill Content on Which Questions May Be Based

Section 1 - Prepare a Roofing worksite (20%)

  • Plan the work
    • Interpret a roof slope plan
    • Distinguish the characteristics of different roofing systems and membranes
  • Prepare the materials and the worksite
    • Organize the handling of materials to the roof
    • Use appropriate equipment correctly
    • Ensure the safety of the worksite and operations
  • Prepare the roof:
    • Prepare the roof deck and upstand (flashing)

Section 2 – Install and Repair Roofing Systems on Flat Roofs (65%)

  • Install an insulation system:
    • Install the vapour barrier
    • Install the insulation
    • Install the support panel
  • Install a membranes on insulated, inverted, and ventilated roofs:
    • Install a single-ply membranes (PO, PVC, EPDM)
    • Install a cold-applied membrane system
    • Install a two-ply elastomeric membrane
    • Install a multi-ply membrane system (asphalt and gravel)
    • Install a liquid-applied membrane (e.g., Hydrotech)
  • Repair an insulated, inverted, and ventilated roofing system: 
    • Analyze the existing roof
    • Perform the required roof repairs

Section 3 – Install and Repair Roofings Systems on Sloped Roofs (15 %)

  • Install an asphalt shingle roofing system:
    • Install roofing membranes and accessories
    • Insall asphalt shingles on the roof surface
  • Repair an asphalt shingle roofing system:
    •  Perform the necessary repairs based on the issues identified
