Boilermaker Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 60 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator, a ruler, an eraser and annexes. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Section 1 – General skills (35%)

  • Safety measure
  • Interpreting plans and specifications
  • Welding procedures
  • Communicating with signals
  • Tools and equipment
  • Erecting scaffolds
  • Level readings
  • Installing anchors
  • Rigging and handling parts and components
  • Checking work quality
  • Construction site mobilization and demobilization

Section 2 – Manufacturing and installation (25%)

  • Manufacturing parts and assembling furnaces, ovens and incinerators:
    • Preparing parts
    • Preassembling components
    • Erecting supports and structures
    • Assembling walls
    • Installing tube supports and tubes
    • Assembling the chimney and junctions
    • Installing ducts and equipment
    • Installing penstocks, spiral casings, treatment systems:
    • Assembling components
    • Dismantling penstock reinforcements

Section 3 – Erection and repairs (20%)

  • Erecting fractionating towers, tanks and silos:
    • Assembling sections
    • Erecting a fractionating tower
    • Putting in place, assembling and welding floor, wall and roof plates
    • Squaring the fractionating tower
    • Building a door plate
    • Installing rafters, centre columns, the roof angle iron and roof plates
  • Repairing exchangers, elements and equipment:
    • Blocked ducts and nozzles
    • Taking measurements
    • Repairs
    • Removing the tube bundle and components
    • Cleaning and repairing the tube bundle
    • Installing the tube bundle
    • Tube and shell leak
    • Test

Section 4 – Assembly and demolition (20%)

  • Assembling boilers:
    • Putting in place columns, steel beams and other structural elements of the boiler
  • Demolishing and disassembling boilers, tanks, towers, elements and equipment:
    • Unblocking nozzles
    • Determining the weight of equipment and elements
    • Dismantling components
    • Handling disassembled elements and debris
