The month of June 2020 marked the start of a new phase of cooperation between the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ), the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, the Kahnawà:ke Labor Office (KLO), the Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones du Québec, the Secrétariat du Québec aux relations canadiennes and the Ministère du Travail, de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale.
These organizations are committed to working together to develop measures to promote the integration of Kahnawà:ke’s workforce into the construction industry beyond the community’s territory. This collaboration also aims to develop measures to provide this workforce with the option to benefit from the conditions of the R-20 act on construction site on the Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory or, if they choose, to benefit from the conditions established by the community.
These initiatives are at the heart of the two agreements between the signatory organizations: the Entente complémentaire visant l’intégration des travailleurs de Kahnawà:ke à l’industrie de la construction du Québec (Complementary Agreement for the Integration of Kahnawà:ke Workers into the Québec Construction Industry) and the Entente complémentaire définissant la collaboration entre la Commission de la construction du Québec et le Bureau du travail de Kahnawà:ke (Complementary Agreement Establishing the Cooperation between the Commission de la construction du Québec and the KLO).
In addition to having developed these agreements together over several years, the organizations will continue working together to implement them. To support workers in their efforts to integrate into Québec’s construction industry, the CCQ will continue its collaboration with the KLO and all the organizations involved.
