What is the Paid Work-study Program in Construction?
This program enables workers employed by a construction company:
- To register in a program leading to a diploma of vocational studies (DVS) in one of the five targeted construction trades. The trades currently prioritized are:
- Bricklayer-mason
- Carpenter-joiner
- Electrician
- Refrigeration mechanic ,
- Pipe fitter
- To be paid while they attend the courses required by the VTC. The initiative allows for the granting of a wage subsidy of up to $25,000 to companies, to provide them with financial support during this period
- To perform one or more paid internships on construction sites in compliance with the collective agreements
Objective: increase the number of qualified graduates on construction sites
The paid work-study pathways in construction, whose objective is to increase the number of qualified workers on job sites, are intended for individuals who hold a valid competency certificate (apprentice or journeyperson in another trade) or an exemption issued by the Commission de la construction du Québec, as well as for newly hired individuals who hold an apprentice competency certificate as a student.
