Welcome

Skills Canada National Competition: Congratulations to the Québec medallists!

June 20, 2016

The 22nd Skills Canada National Competition for trades and technologies took place in Moncton, New Brunswick, June 5–8. Among the winners were Québecers Alexandre Duval (electrical installations), Pierre-Olivier Desmarais (brick masonry), and Nicolas Fortin (carpentry), all silver medallists in their respective disciplines.

To reach the national competition, the Québec representatives had to have won at the 14th Olympiades québécoises des métiers et des technologies, held in May.

14th Olympiades québécoises des métiers et des technologies

On May 4, the president and CEO of the CCQ, Diane Lemieux, proclaimed the 14th Olympiades québécoises des métiers et des technologies open. Thirty-two disciplines from vocational training and technical college training were presented in competition on May 5 and 6 at the Centre des foires de Québec.

Every two years, this event offers an excellent showcase on the construction industry, highlights fascinating trades, and unveils the talents of numerous participants whose qualities and skills will bring them great success on the job market. It also provides an opportunity to reach out to thousands of young and not-so-young people who are preparing to make a career choice.

Presented by Compétences Québec, this competition attracted almost 10,000 visitors, 234 future graduates, 168 judges from Quebec industry, and 95 vocational-training and college training centres.

The CCQ: A lasting presence

As a major financial partner of the Olympiades québécoises des métiers et des technologies for almost 25 years, the CCQ has offered a demonstration space for certain trades outside of the competition, and has also recruited, on a parity basis, judges in the categories that fall under its aegis.

The CCQ will also support the Quebec representatives who will be going to the WorldSkills Competition through the Fonds de formation de l’industrie de la construction and recognition of apprenticeship hours. The next WorldSkills Competition will take place in Abu Dhabi in October 2017.

This partnership is part of the CCQ’s mission of promoting the construction industry among the next generation of workers, including those who are young, immigrants, Aboriginals, handicapped, or female.
