Reinforcing Steel Erector Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 51 questions and each question ia worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Section 1 - Work organization and planning (25%)

  • Interpreting instructions and the work plan
  • Recognizing WHMIS symbols
  • Securing the premises and workers
  • Assembling and disassembling scaffolds
  • Selecting necessary equipment and materials
  • Checking the condition of equipment
  • Slinging steel bars
  • Using signals to communicate with the crane operator
  • Defining the path to follow
  • Manually handling materials
  • Choosing and classifying reinforcing steel and other materials
  • Putting trestles in place

Section 2 - Reinforcement construction and installation (55%)

  • Reinforcing Bars, Prefabricated Elements and Wire Meshes:
    • Recognizing the surveyor’s location and elevation points
    • Installing templates
    • Marking the spacing and locations of supports
    • Adjusting reinforcing steel pieces
    • Selecting elements to be placed
    • Installing supports, spacers, reinforcing bars and stirrups
    • Putting wire mesh in place
    • Determining the locations and heights of elements
    • Selecting the type of fastening to be done
    • Determining the location of fasteners
    • Checking assembly elements
    • Checking the planned concrete cover
    • Strengthening a reinforcing steel structure for rigging
    • Selecting and applying an assembly stabilizing method
  • Post–Tensioning Systems:
    • Preparing materials and equipment for a post-tensioning system
    • Meeting safety standards for producing a post-tensioning system
    • Installing a post-tensioning

Section 3 - Modifying a reinforcing structure (20%)

  • Reinforcing Steel Cutting:
    • Taking measurements for cutting bars or wire meshes
    • Power cutting a reinforcing bar
    • Wire mesh shearing
    • Meeting safety standards for the assembly of an oxyacetylen cutting station
  • Reinforcement Jointing:
    • Selecting the joints to be installed
    • Installing the tag
    • Screwing or tightening the tag
    • Checking installation compliance
    • Meeting safety standards for assembling a welding set
    • Producing simple welds
  • Installation of Dowels:
    • Installing the depth gauge
    • Drilling holes
    • Cleaning holes
    • Injecting adhesive or grout
    • Inserting dowels
