Saguenay - Work is continuing despite the CCQ’s outright ban

On December 15, the Commission de la construction du Québec observed that work was continuing on the site of a commercial building situated at 2230 Boul. St-Paul in the Chicoutimi Borough, despite an order of suspension of work for this site. The Commission will therefore transmit a referral for prosecution for lack of compliance with an order of suspension of work to the Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales.

After a third suspension of work, Couvertures Bel-R inc./Bishop Mercier Contracting has its Régie du bâtiment licence suspended

On December 7, the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) issued a third order of suspension of work for a site of Couvertures Bel-R Inc. / Bishop Mercier Contracting. The site is a commercial building under renovation situated at 2877 Chemin de Chambly, Longueuil. During an inspection conducted on November 20, a CCQ inspector observed that a worker present on the site did not hold a competency certificate.

Activity continued to slow in the third quarter of 2015, falling by 5.8% compared to the same period in 2014, for a volume of work of 39.4 million hours covered under Act R-20.

Winter vacation cheques

The holiday season is almost upon us, and the construction winter vacation this year will be from December 20, 2015 to January 2, 2016, inclusive.

On November 23, 2015, the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) will mail out 131,751 vacation cheques to construction workers in Québec. A total of $282,552,123 will be distributed throughout the province. [More]

The CCQ stands out again for durable transportation!

At the Déjeuner Leaders en transport durable 2015, which took place on September 30 at the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Diane Lemieux received, on behalf of the CCQ, the Leaders award in the Continuité category for the measures that the organization has implemented to increase employees’ use of active and public modes of transportation. Review of activity in the construction industry – second quarter 2015

“The decline continued in the construction industry falling under Act R-20, but less steeply than at the beginning of the year. In the second quarter of 2015, a drop of 6% compared to the same period in 2014 brought the volume of work to 37.1 million hours. The number of employees on construction sites stood at 103,000 during the quarter, a reduction of 3.5% from the year before. Only the institutional and commercial sector gained strength, whereas the industrial, civil engineering and roadwork, and residential sectors saw a fallback in volume of work.” [More]

Work suspended on a site in southwest Montreal after a major operation conducted by the CCQ

Earlier today, Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) issued an order of suspension of construction work for the site of a commercial building owned by Mark and Philip Kaufman, situated at 2240-2250 Rue Pitt in Sud-ouest Borough. This order was issued following a verification operation conducted last week, during which numerous violations of the Act Respecting Labour Relations, Vocational Training and Workforce Management in the Construction Industry (known as Act R-20) were observed by the 15 CCQ experts dispatched to the site. The origin of the operation was a lengthy denunciation of possible violations in relation to renovation work being performed covered by the Act. [More]

Not respecting a suspension of work: An act with serious consequences

Following a denunciation by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ), on August 14 the Superior Court found contractor Yannick Forest guilty of contempt of court for the second time, as he had not respected an order of suspension of construction work. [More]

A young Quebec refrigeration mechanic wins the bronze medal at the WorldSkills competition

Marc-Antoine Bettez, a refrigeration mechanic by training, has won the bronze medal at the 43rd WorldSkills competition, 2015 edition, held in São Paulo, Brazil, August 11–16. It was the first time that a Québecer trained in a construction trade was on the podium at this prestigious competition. [More]

As part of the 2014–15 edition of the Chapeau, les filles! competition, the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) awarded $2,000 scholarships to two women students in the construction sector. The recipients are Kim Santoire, a carpentry-joinery student, winner in the Construction Trades section, and Ariane Grenier, also a carpentry-joinery student, in the Construction Contractor section. Today, the president and CEO of the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ), Diane Lemieux, and the minister of labour, employment, and social solidarity, Sam Hamad, launched the new Programme d’accès à l’égalité des femmes dans l’industrie de la construction (PAEF) 2015–2024. Revue de l'activité dans l'industrie de la construction - 4e trimestre 2014

Activity in the construction industry dropped in the fourth quarter of 2014. The volume of work totalled 39.7 million hours, 5% lower than in 2013, and 109,622 workers were employed on construction sites, or 3% below the 2013 level. The civil engineering and roadwork sector had the greatest decline, followed by the residential sector. The industrial sector and the institutional and commercial sector reported more moderate decreases. [More]
