Welcome

Journeyman-apprentice ratio

Under the Regulation Respecting Vocational Training and Qualification of Workforce in the Construction Industry (R-20, r. 8), the employer may have tasks executed by an apprentice only under the surveillance of a journeyman in the same trade. If the tasks are part of more than one trade, the apprentice must be under the supervision of a journeyman one of these trades.

For each workday, employers must comply with a journeyman-apprentice ratio per trade for all workers that they hire (all sites combined). Employers may hire another apprentice when there is one journeyman more than the ratio required (or all multiples of this ratio).

The ratios in the industry are from 1 to 5 journeymen required per apprentice, depending on the trade and the sector in which the activity is performed: residential, industrial, institutional and commercial, and civil engineering and roadwork.
