Ironworker Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 51 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator, a ruler and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Skill content on which questions may be based

Operating a tractor includes operation of a loader, a backhoe and a bulldozer.

Section 1 – General knowledge (35%)

  • Planning and preparing the work:
    • Interpreting structural and architectural plans
    • Calculating surfaces, distances and masses
    • Crane installation
    • Erecting scaffoldings
    • Applying safety measures
  • Handling materials, tools and equipment:
    • Selecting the lifting device
    • Choosing a rigging system according to its capacity and features
    • Installing slings
    • Choosing knots
    • Signals to the crane operator
  • Welding and cutting:
    • Assembling a welding and oxygen cutting station
    • Welding and cutting processes
    • Recognizing defects and correcting them

Section 2 – Erecting and dismantling structural and architectural elements (33%)

  • Preparing anchors and shims
  • Centre lines
  • Safety cables
  • Assembly processes
  • Procedures for bolting, tightening and plumbing steel elements
  • Fastening concrete elements temporarily and permanently
  • Dismantling by removing fasteners

Section 3 – Modifying and installing metalwork (32%)

  • Verifying the compliance of the work
  • Taking measurements
  • Modifying staircases and railings
  • Preparing the parts
  • Installing the parts
  • Finishing the work
