Heavy Equipment Mechanic Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It consists of 65 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials supplied for your use during the examination are: a calculator, a pencil, a paper sheet and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Section 1 - Maintenance and Repair of Engines, Fuel Systems and Exhaust Systems (28 %)

  • Preparatory Work for Maintenance and Repairs:
    • Preventing occupational health and safety hazards
    • Welding and cutting

    • Preventing risks to the environment
  • Diagnosing a problem:
    • With engines, fuel systems, exhaust systems and their components
    • Detection of anomalies
    • Diagnostic software data interpretation
    • Checking the pressure and resistance components
    • Functional testing, testing and inspections
  • Repair and maintenance:
    • Repairing and replacing engines, fuel systems, exhaust systems and their components
    • Repairing air intake and exhaust circuits and their components
    • Repairing a lubrification and cooling circuit
    • Replacement of an engine
    • Replacement of various seals
    • Valves and motor belt tension adjustment
    • Injection system calibration
    • Preventive and periodic maintenance of engines, fuel systems and exhaust systems
    • Replacement of fluids and filters

    • Engine and fuel system tune-ups

Section 2 - Maintenance and Repair of Electric, Electronic Systems, cabs and their accessories (32 %)

  • Diagnosing a problem with electric and electronic systems:
    • Diagnosing a problem with charging and start systems
    • Checking the battery and its connections, alternator and load circuit
    • Interpretation of the electrical diagram
  • Maintenance and repair of electric and electronic systems:
    • Repairing and replacing charging and start systems as well as their components
    • Replacement of components such as batteries, starters and alternators
    • Repair of lighting equipment
    • Installation of electronic control module sensors
    • Preventive and periodic maintenance of charging and start systems
  • Maintenance and repair of cabs and their accessories:
    • Diagnosing a problem with cabs and their accessories
    • Repair of heating and cooling systems
    • Component (seat and cabin accessories) repair
    • Security system, filtration system and dashboard verification
  • Maintenance and repair of attachments:
    • Detection of anomalies such as cracks and leaks
    • Diagnostic software data interpretation
    • Compliance with manufacturers’ specifications
    • Preventive and periodic maintenance of attachments

Section 3 - Maintenance and Repair of Power Train Systems and Components (40 %)

  • Diagnosing a problem:
    • With clutches and transmissions;
    • chassis, running gears, wheels, steering and suspension systems;
    • braking systems and their components;
    • hydraulic and pneumatic system components
  • Repair and replacement:

    • Manual, automatic and hydrostatic transmissions
