Roofer Examination

The examination is 3 hours long. It contains 51 questions and each question is worth 1 point. The required passing grade is 60%. The materials for your use during the examination are provided to you. They are: a pencil, a paper sheet, a calculator and an eraser. No other material or reference document is allowed during the examination.

Section 1 - Organize the Work (20%)

  • Plan the work
    • Calculate surfaces and quantities
    • Prepare materials
    • Prepare the site
  • Prepare the decking
    • Remove the coating
    • Check and clean the decking

Section 2 - Install Single-Ply (e.g. : EPDM, TPO, Asphalt Rubber) or Two-Ply (e.g.: Modified Bitumen, Elastomer) Membrane Roofing (40%)

  • Single-ply system on an insulated (sandwich) or inverted roof
    • Install a support board, vapour barrier, insulation, protection paper
    • Lay the membrane
    • Seal the joints
    • Seal drains and projections
    • Apply flashing, filter cloth, ballast
    • Recognize and correct installation defects
    • Recognize signs of wear
    • Make repairs
  • Two-ply system on an insulated (sandwich), inverted or ventilated roof
    • Install a support board, vapour barrier, insulation
    • Apply the underlay
    • Seal the joints
    • Seal drains and projections
    • Apply flashing, filter cloth, ballast
    • Apply the finish membrane
    • Recognize and correct installation defects
    • Recognize signs of wear
    • Make repairs

Section 3 - Install and repair a Multi-Ply System on a Insulated (Sandwich) or Ventiled Roof (Asphalt and Gravel) (20%)

  • Concrete and steel decking
  • Install the support board, vapour barrier, insulation, chamfers, asphalt 
  • Apply #15 felt paper
  • Seal drains and projections
  • Apply flashing
  • Seal control and expansion joints
  • Apply and seal drips 
  • Recognize and correct installation defects
  • Recognize signs of wear
  • Make repairs

Section 4 - Install and Repair a Shingle Roofing on a Ventilated Roof (20%) 

  • Apply drips, paper
  • Trace reference points
  • Lay shingles and squares
  • Install projections
  • Lay flashing and the ridge tile
  • Recognize and correct application defects
  • Recognize signs of wear
  • Make repairs
