Regulatory changes in the construction industry

The practice of trades in the construction industry is constantly evolving to adapt to the requirements of the job market. Some of these trades will now necessitate either a greater number of skills or greater specialization. Therefore, changes have been made to two regulations:

This regulatory change is the result of studies conducted by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) and of its consultations with union associations, employer associations, and certain specialized companies.

Four trades covered

Four trades are covered by this regulatory change, in effect starting July 18, 2013:

  • Carpenter-joiner 
    • New specialty: flooring specialist sander
    • New specialty: concrete former
    • New specialty: deep foundation layer
  • Crane operator
    • New specialty: Operator of concrete pumps with distribution mast
    • Change in number of apprenticeship periods
  • Structural steel erector
    • New trade: Ironworker (consolidation of the trades of structural steel erector and ornamental iron worker)
    • Change in number of apprenticeship periods
  • Ornamental iron worker
    • New trade: Ironworker (consolidation of the trades of structural steel erector and ornamental iron worker)
    • Change in number of apprenticeship periods
